The great feast!

I’d give all my life earnings for a meal at the Great Hall of Hogwarts. Two problems with that: firstly, I’ve already spent all my earnings. Secondly, there is a slight chance that Hogwarts might not be real. A very slight chance though. If you’ve read or watched Harry Potter, you wouldn’t have missed the amazing food mentioned and seen in this magical series. Delicious and fascinating food that we’ve all dreamt of eating one day. Sure, we can’t apparate into the world of Harry Potter for their culinary feast, but we can make our own magical feast sans the magical elements!

As stated in Five Principal Exceptions to Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration, I can’t conjure food out of thin air. But there is no rule against dishing out some delicious recipes for DIY Harry Potter inspired dishes! Here are 5 recipes inspired by the series. You can thank me later by sending over a crate of Butterbeer!

Hagrid’s infamous rock cakes almost broke Ron and Harry’s teeth but we can blame that on Hagrid’s cooking. The real rock cakes aren’t half bad and cause no damage to your teeth. Here is how you can make a softer version of Hagrid’s rock cakes:

Sorting hat samosas

You don’t need to be a Harry Potter fan to know of the sorting hat. This sentient hat at Hogwarts decides which Hogwarts house the students belong to. But with this sorting hat samosa, the eater decides which chutney the samosa hat goes into! This is more of a cooking trick than a recipe, but it’s just as fun!

Samosas with a green dip on a wooden serving plate
Not the bitter chutney! Not the bitter chutney!

How to:

  • Follow the steps of making a regular samosa up until the filling is in the dough. Once you’ve filled the samosa and sealed the edges, twirl the top a bit to look like the tip of the sorting hat and with a toothpick, make two eyes and a nose resembling the sorting hat. Fry it normally and you have your sorting hat samosas!

**You can also make four chutneys in the colours of Hogwarts 4 houses to truly make it a Harry Potter-inspired dish!

Acid pops

Remember Honeydukes? Yea, bit of a stupid question, ain’t it? Honeydukes, the sweetshop in Hogsmeade was popular for its unconventional and fascinating collection of chocolates and candies. Acid pops were one among the popular candies there. Even though it looked like a regular lollipop, these could burn a hole in your tongue. We don’t want any of your tongues to be burnt, so here is a recipe for a milder version of these pops:

Onion soup

The first time onion soup made its appearance in Harry Potter was when Mrs Weasley prepared Harry a steaming bowl of it on his first night at The Burrow. The second time was when Kreacher (the reformed version) prepared a nice bowl of French onion soup for the trio when they were staying at the Dursley’s family house in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’. We are sure both versions were incredibly delicious, here is our take on it:
