Netflix’s ‘Stranger things’ has broken the usual TV norms in that parents and kids are finally watching TV together again! The intriguing plot, exceptional characters, amazing direction, and a great soundtrack has kept viewers engaged for over three years now. Set in the ’80s, the show has got retro fashion spot-on. The six OG characters were seen in some classic kid’s retro clothes in Season 3 which was released this year. This article focuses on Stranger Things inspired retro fashion for kids!
Except for Will’s robe and El’s plaid shirts (we have Hopper to blame for that), Season 3 of Stranger things has left us with some beloved fashion moments amongst other things. In honour of this amazing series, we have picked out a few key kids’ wardrobe staples for that perfect ‘Staying fashionable while fighting underworld demons’ look.
Stripes all the way!
Nothing says retro like a striped ringer t-shirt. This unisex piece was a wardrobe staple in the ’80s and was usually paired with shorts and high waist jeans by adults and kids. We can see Max, Lucas, and Will sporting striped t-shirts in the recently released season. Even Robin’s “Scoops Ahoy” uniform had a blue and white t-shirt with stripes.
D&D- Denim & more Denim!
There are a handful of fashion pieces that define retro fashion and the denim jacket is one of them. Denim jackets can turn any regular kids’ outfit into a retro fashion statement. In the series, we see Dustin and Mike sport a sleeveless denim jacket over a regular t-shirt. We suggest going for the trucker style for the perfect vintage feel.
El’s edgy side
One of the most memorable scenes of Season 3 was the Mall scene where Max takes El shopping. After a little fashion show, El chooses a quirky girl’s romper that screams retro. While you might not agree with El’s rebellious actions, you can’t deny that she has style. Take your little girl shopping and let her choose her own romper- à la mode de Eleven.
Cool it down!
Lucas in Stranger Things has the attitude and dressing sense of a quintessential cool boy. He has proved to be the king of retro casual fashion with his simple sleeveless ringer tees and regular sleeveless style throughout the lastest season. These vests are perfect for the summer and seem to have kept Lucas cool even under Max’s many deathly glares.
Sneaking around!
Comfortable sneakers are a must-have for Hawkins’ kids as they spend most of their time running away from the creatures of the Upside-down world or their parents. Regular kids sneakers in solid colours with minimal detailing rate high on the style meter.
Scrunch it up!
There is no time for intricate hairstyles when you are trying to save the town from an ugly underworld demon. El knows this very well and usually has her hair tied back in a bright yellow scrunchie. Take a cue from her functional style and get your little girl some colourful scrunchies.
These were some of our favourite retro fashion pieces for kids inspired by Stranger Things season 3. If you are looking for some fashion pieces inspired by the series for yourself, you might want to look into Hopper’s Hawaiian shirt, Joyce’s mom jeans, or Nancy’s shirt dresses.
