Theme It Up: 5 Amazingly Fun Birthday Party Ideas for Kids

Themed birthday parties have become all the rage right now and for some inexplicable reason, my kids are getting seriously obsessed with movie and cartoon characters. My first-born, however, has completely outgrown that phase (Phew!) Nevertheless, the other two totally make up for all the lack of enthusiasm on their big bro’s part!

Last year, I hit a major home-run with my ‘Frozen’ themed birthday party for my princess, Ridhima. Yes, in case you’re wondering, I went all out with the blue dresses, the magnificent Elsa and Anna cake, and I even managed the make-believe snowflakes. Needless to say, Ridhima was impressed. However, my husband and I realised that it takes an insane amount of planning to get it just right! So, I decided to curate a list of some of my favourite, tried-and-tested birthday party themes that your kids are certain to have a blast at and that will also save you from spending a bomb!

Let’s begin!!

The Minnie Mouse Theme

Minnie Mouse
Oh, Minnie! You’re so fine, you blow my mind!

We had a Minnie mouse themed birthday bash for our daughter’s 2nd birthday and it was an instant hit with the kids AND the parents!! We ordered a customised birthday cake (Minnie Mouse was on the cake!) coupled with pink-frosted cupcakes for the parents. For the kids, the dress code was anything in pink polka dots (which is the standard design of the dress worn by Minnie mouse). We also went slightly overboard by handing out Mickey ears to the fathers and polka-dotted bows to the mothers! You can also experiment with things like party hats, banners, and so on.

The Barbie Theme

Come on Barbie, let’s go party!

It still surprises me to say that we had a Barbie-themed birthday party when our son, Nikhil, turned 3 years old. When he turned 2, he became completely (and much to my husband’s chagrin) obsessed with Barbies and dollhouses. So, my husband and I figured that it’s time we broke the conventional norms of the society and gave our son THE BEST day of his life. And, we did. We booked an exotic venue and had it decorated with Barbie dolls and cutouts. I hunted down the best Barbie-inspired costume for my baby boy (Dungarees) and boy, did he look handsome! As part of the return gift ritual, I went for the simple, cost-effective, Barbie printed stationaries. Whoever said Barbies are for girls was so wrong.

The Frozen Theme

Elsa from ‘Frozen’ the movie
‘The cold never bothered me anyway’!

I think as parents, we can all agree to one universal fact that Frozen REALLY had an impact on our kids! My daughter, Ridhima was completely smitten with the movie and so, when she turned 4, we organised the most magnificent princess party for her. We started off with some DIY snowflakes and hung them up with white threads! By the time we were done, I could have sworn I was standing right in the middle of the Arendelle Castle itself! It looked majestic. The birthday girl was obviously dressed as Elsa and she even had a cake with Anna and Elsa figurines that took little to no effort. We handed out these Olaf, Anna, and Elsa mugs to Ridhima’s friends as return gifts. For that oomph factor, I also decided to buy a tiara for my princess which she rocked like everything else!

The Pancake Pajama Theme

Gobble Gobble! Pancake monster is in the house!

This has to be our most favourite out-of-the-box birthday party ideas to date! When my oldest kid, Himanshu, turned a year old, we thought of marking that day with the food item that he loved the most! Pancakes! What’s more? The dress code was ‘Pajamas’ and all kids and parents were supposed to show up wearing these cutesy night dresses to go with the theme! We decided to have an all-breakfast menu, to stay in line with the whole ‘Pancake-Pajama’ vibe. We did get a cake, however, that had a milk chocolate ganache filling! My husband was quite sceptical about the whole event, but it turned out to be a HUGE success and by the end of the night, our little boy was jumping with joy and laughing uproariously (which we later figured was just a Sugar Rush!)

The Hot Air Balloon Theme

Hot air balloons in the air
My dream is to fly, over the rainbow so high!

When my son, Nikhil, turned 5 years old, we decided to throw him a Hot Air Balloon themed birthday bash to give out the message that ‘Time flies super fast when your babies are growing up’. We called for a hot air balloon shaped chocolate truffle cake and it was adorable how Nikhil was just dumbfoundedly gaping at everything! We could tell he was having so much fun. We hung hot air balloon paper lanterns all over the place and I swear the place looked like a scene taken straight out of a Disney movie! We also had doughnuts and cupcakes to go with the theme! Needless to say, Nikhil (who is now 8 years old) still remembers that event.

Out of the many many (I’ve lost count) birthday parties I have organised for my kids, these are my absolute favourite and are the most memorable ones!

Share your favourite birthday party themes with me and do let me know if any of these ideas have been helpful for you.
