Muesli or oats?

If you have ever read an article about foods you should be eating to lose weight, you’d have come across ‘oats’ and ‘muesli’ in pretty much all of them. Considered to be some of the healthiest breakfast options, oatmeal and muesli are healthy and delicious. But there has always been an argument as to which one of these two options helps you lose weight. I had the same question when I was trying to lose weight last year and after thorough research and personal experience, I found out the answer. But before we get into the battle of Oats Vs Muesli, it would serve us well to know a little about both.

How different is Muesli from Oats?

Is there a difference?

If oatmeal is like a glass of fresh milk, muesli is like a glass of chocolate milk. Oats is a gluten-free whole grain that’s processed into flakes most popularly consumed in the form of oatmeal. Muesli, on the other hand, is a combination of nuts, dried fruits, seeds, and oats! While most of the muesli available in the market contain oats, there are a handful of muesli options available without oats.

Nutrition

When it comes to nutrition, oats by itself is very rich in key nutrients, protein, and fibre. But muesli has higher protein and nutrient content owing to the added ingredients. The more additional ingredients the muesli has, the higher the nutrition value.  But unlike oats, muesli has added sugar which cancels out all the additional good stuff. But if you find a no-sugar variant of muesli, there is nothing like it.

Taste

Like I already mentioned, muesli has a lot of additional ingredients which brings in a variety of flavour. When compared to muesli, oats can be quite bland, especially when it’s cooked without any extra ingredients.

Oats Vs Muesli- which is the better option for weight loss?

Both oats and muesli are extremely healthy, but if you had to ask me to pick between the two as an option for weight loss, oats will be the clear winner. Oats works better for weight loss solely for the reason that it does not have additional ingredients which also means that there is no added sugar. The lack of sugar aids greatly in weight loss. If you are looking for an option for weight loss, choose oats. But if you are looking for a healthy breakfast option, both oats and muesli work.
