I absolutely love planning events! So it’s no surprise that I have been organising birthday parties for my son, Aarav, since his first birthday. The best part about a kid’s birthday party is that you can go all out with the theme, party decorations, games, and food. Planning a kid’s party is a lot of fun and you can involve your child in the planning process – even if it’s something as small as choosing party decoration colours, party themes, or games.
How to plan a kid’s birthday party
Just as planning any other event goes, you have to zero in on a few details and start working towards each one of them. Here’s a guide that’ll make sure you plan the perfect birthday party for your kid and hopefully give you new birthday party ideas.
Decide on a theme
We had an artsy birthday party for Aarav’s first birthday because I finally had the time to work on some art and craft projects that I didn’t have time for post-delivery. The first birthday is probably the only time you’ll get to decide a theme based on your likes because once kids get older, they’re going to have a gazillion ideas of their own.
Your birthday party theme could be something as simple as a colour theme or a pattern such as polka-dots, or a cartoon character that your child currently adores. You could also choose a food item such as cupcakes, pancakes, ice cream, etc.
Fix a budget
Figure how much of your savings you can set aside for your kid’s birthday party. This will help you decide the scale of the birthday and how much leeway you have in buying things from outside. If you decide on a smaller budget, you can always fancy up the party with some DIY stuff.
Choose a place
Depending on your budget, you can decide if you want to have a cosy indoor party at home or go out with the kids. I suggest you save the outdoor parties for when your kid has learnt to walk and can enjoy running around and playing games with friends.
For kids who’ve learnt to trot and run, you could plan a birthday at a bowling alley, a gaming station, a resort, and amusement park, a day-light camping trip, etc. Kids are natural explorers so they would absolutely love the change in scenery.
Figure out the food and games
Decide on a snack menu that is filled with kid-friendly food and dishes that go with the theme (if possible). Try to get a fun, customised birthday cake that is designed in line with the party theme.
Plan at least 3 games for kids such as fun races, scavenger hunt, pin the tail on the donkey, musical chairs, treasure hunt, etc. Make sure you save up some special gifts for the winners of each game – there’s no fun in a game without a prize!
Don’t forget the invitations
Once you’ve got the party date, time, and venue fixed, go ahead and make fun invitations and send it to the invitees. Get your kids to help you make the invitations – I’m sure they’ll enjoy the process too. Mention the theme in the invitation so that all kids, moms, and dads can come dressed accordingly.
That’s about it. Once you have all these in place, you can work on other things such as the party decorations, return gifts for the kids, and so on.
