Fashion Fridays: Monochromatic Outfits for Kids!

A young boy and girl dressed in monochromatic outfits.

I’m sure you wouldn’t argue if I told you that monochromatic outfits for kids make for the most sophisticated looks. Monochromatic outfits flow so beautifully – no matter the colour. You can pick any colour, from light ivory, mustard and teal, to dark hues like tan, magenta, and indigo. Each of these colours can create a flawless style.

What exactly is a monochromatic or monochrome outfit?

If you’re wondering what monochromatic outfits mean – it’s a head-to-toe style where one solid colour is used throughout – from hair accessories to shoes. Lately, monochromatic trends include a few simple prints on one of the layers or varying shades (of the same colour) for a few of the layers.

And the best part of monochrome fashion is that both – boys and girls – look undeniably classy and give them Paris fashion ramp feels. Here’s a quick monochrome styling guide for girls and boys!

For the Girls

Since creating monochromatic outfits for kids is all about the colour, let’s focus on the colour. So, you could pick any colour of your choice – two of the outfits I’ve picked here are pastel shades (something I’ve been leaning towards lately) and two are bold colours that will look lovely for evening parties.

Peachy Pink

With the pastel pink top-and-pants set, you can play around a little with salmon-coloured shoes or a pretty rose-coloured hair accessory. If you decide to go all pink with your child’s outfit, which I’m sure will turn out to be great, you can probably try putting together same-coloured stuff with slightly different textures.

Tasteful Teal

Monochrome looks gorgeous in case of ethnic outfits too. This full teal-coloured kurta and shararas set with minimalistic gold designs looks perfect to be worn at festivals and weddings. I see monochromatic outfits for kids as those that blend two colours to create an elegant look. So this one does the trick!

Moody Maroon

If you like dark hues better, you could pick up a chic maroon dress that makes for a perfect birthday girl outfit. Find a pair of nice velvety maroon ballerinas and a matching hairband to complement this pretty dress.

Beauteous Black

Who said babies can’t follow fashion trends! You can find the most beautiful of onesies in monochrome. Since we’re focussing on dark hues for girls here, take a look at this gorgeous black onesie! Your little girl will look as pretty as an older girl wearing a tutu skirt while enjoying the comfort of a onesie. Do give it a peek!

For the Boys

Though ‘mono’ in monochrome means single, there is no hard and fast rule that you should stick to a single colour while creating these looks. Here are some of the colour combos you can borrow to build a monochrome wardrobe for your little boy.

Gentle Grey

You can choose a three-piece suit for your little boy in colour combinations like grey-and-white or even black-and-white. These will still count as a monochromatic looks making the little man look as dapper as ever.

Glorious Gold

In the ethnic section, I found this impressive dull gold kurta-and-dhoti set for boys that does justice to the monochrome trend for kids. The waistcoat definitely seems like the point of interest but the variation in shades of gold takes the look to a whole new level. Pair this up with a pair of rough-textured gold jutis and the little chap is all set to dazzle.

Breezy Blue

You can never go wrong with blues – be it a casual outfit or a formal one. Or something in between – like this bow shirt-and-shorts set for boys. You could pick a pair of blue loafer shoes to go with the outfit and this will make for a perfect birthday boy look!

Refreshing Red

Why leave the little ones out of this fantastic fashion trend? You can dress up your baby boy in a monochrome onesie paired up with the same coloured beanie and shoes. My pick here would be a refreshing red coloured onesie, take a look for yourself!

What we are trying to achieve with monochromatic outfits for kids is to design an outfit that is stunning yet sober.
