6 places to visit in India with your kids this Republic Day 2020!

Our country has lived through plenty of wars, and so, as a result, it has become a place filled with memorials and forts serving as a reminder of the rule of so many dynasties and the mass struggle for freedom! So, this year, pay a visit to one of these places (or all of them!) and ignite your patriotic fervour.

The below-mentioned destinations are some of my favourite places to visit in India during Republic Day! And, it’s even more fun when you have your kids with you, soaking it all in.

Red Fort and India Gate, New Delhi

Red Fort, New Delhi.

Where one is a memorial built to commemorate all those who sacrificed their lives in the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan war, which happened in 1919, the other used to be the regal residential palace of the Mughals.

India Gate, New Delhi.

Being one of the largest war structures to have ever been built in the country, the magnificent arch of India Gate holds the names of at least 13,000 soldiers who laid down their lives in the war. Your kids will love the ambience that the place offers, with its lush green surroundings and well-kept gardens. You will spot plenty of families hanging out at India Gate, especially in the evening, munching on snacks, or licking on juicy popsicles. Your kids will love the day parade ceremonies passing India Gate.

The well-preserved Red Fort is a sight you cannot look away from! The grandeur of the luxurious building is a testimonial to an era that has passed us by. Every year, a flag is hoisted at the Red Fort which was constructed when Emperor Shah Jahan moved his capital to Delhi.

Wagah Border and Jallianwala Bagh, Punjab

Jallianwala Bagh memorial, Amritsar, Punjab.

On the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi, about a hundred years ago, the British army massacred hundreds of peaceful protesters in a space known as the Jallianwala Bagh, in the state of Punjab. This place is of significant importance as it stands as a harsh reminder of what happened, with its walls still riddled with bullet marks. The massacre marked a turning point in our country’s history, thereby permanently scarring British-Indo relations.

Pakistan-India Wagah Border.

A line separating two worlds, Wagah border was planned and created during the time of India-Pakistan partition, with a complex map for enhanced security. You must visit this place with your family for the magnificent border ceremony that’s conducted by the Pakistan Rangers and BSF soldiers, portraying a melancholic amalgamation of brotherhood and rivalry between the two nations!

Sabarmati Ashram, Gujarati

Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

It was from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat that Mahatma Gandhi commenced the long Dandi march on March 12th, 1930! He vowed to not return to his country until it had won its independence. Taking a glimpse at the Gandhi way of living was rejuvenating for me and my kids. Located on the banks of the Sabarmati river, Gandhi Ashram can have a completely magical effect on you, which is what makes it one of most interesting places to visit in India during Republic Day with your kids.

Cellular Jail, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Cellular Jail at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

A dark reminiscence of the rule of the British, the cellular jail, located in a remote archipelago, was used particularly to confine India’s political prisoners. This gruelling and most dreaded prison was also referred to as ‘Kala Paani’ and it stood in complete isolation from the mainland. A walk through the colossal structure is sure to give you the chills, as you remember the sons who sacrificed their lives while shouting ‘Inqilab Zindabad’!

These are some of my most beloved spots to visit during the Republic Day! It’s even more special when I get to pass on the sentiment to my kids.
