I have been a Potterhead for as long as I can remember! So, it’s only natural that my children are insanely obsessed about when their acceptance letter from Hogwarts will arrive.
While you are waiting for a magical flying car to rescue you from the mundaneness of life, the wizards-in-training have apparated a wondrous collection of bewitched Harry Potter craft activities for kids to present them with a goblet full of fun and magic!
With the help of my very own Sorcerer’s Stone, I have compiled a list of some of the most fun, DIY activities that your kids (and geeky grownups, such as myself) can indulge in. Through these activities, you can teach your kid a thing or two as well as bring JK Rowling’s magical work to life.
Here’s some of the craft activities we tried out in the dungeons (thankfully the trolls had gone out for a walk in the Forbidden Forest!).
The Hogwarts Acceptance Letter
It all begins with a mystical owl and a letter, doesn’t it? Making this one from scratch brought back so many memories.
- Download the envelope image and the Harry Potter font from the Internet.
- Open the photo in an image editing software and add your child’s name.
- Print it out.
- Cut out the envelope and fold it inwards from 4 sides and tape the 2 sides to the bottom flap.
- Take a printout of the Hogwarts seal.
- Put the letter inside the envelope and stick a tape to the seal’s back.
- Now seal the envelope and voila, your Hogwarts acceptance letter is ready!
Nimbus 2000 Broomstick
I made a miniature model of the famous Nimbus 2000 that Harry receives as a gift on having made it in the Quidditch team!
- Get a reference picture to get it right.
- Draw it out on a cardboard and cut out the broomstick.
- I used a bunch of twigs to make for the front part of the broomstick and tied them up with rubber bands.
- Then, I extended the stick into the twigs section.
- I used watercolours to paint the miniature broomstick!
The Golden Snitch
When Harry caught that glittering, shiny Golden Snitch, I knew I wanted one in my house! So, we tried out our very own DIY golden snitch.
- Take a small ball and wrap it up with aluminium foil.
- Use a paintbrush and golden watercolour to paint the ball.
- Draw the wings of the snitch onto a paper plate and cut them out.
- Add some details.
- Stick glue at the tips of the wings and attach them to the ball.
- Have a Quidditch match at home, guys!
Harry Potter Tshirts
This one was a slam dunk since both my kids are talented painters!
- Take a plain black T-shirt.
- Ask your kids to go bananas with Harry Potter quotes and pictures using colours!
Whether you’re a schoolteacher or a stay-at-home mother, you, almost as certain as the Sorting Hat, are sure to find some exciting ideas in this list!
Till then, enjoy a butterbeer and try these fun Harry Potter craft activities at home with your kids.
If you are a fellow Potterhead yourself, you can always try out some other inspiring DIY projects (maybe a troll bogey?) and share them with me in the comments section.
Mischief managed!
