I tried onion juice on my hair so you don’t have to! Does this natural hair growth remedy work?

I’m known to be somewhat of a DIY queen amongst my friends. It all started in my teenage years when I started whipping up weird concoctions in the kitchen to combat my hormonal acne. I’ve always been a fan of natural beauty remedies over prescription or over-the-counter products. So, when I started noticing my receding hairline a couple of months ago, my immediate reaction was to look up some natural hair growth remedy. There were regular ones like oiling your hair, DIY hair spas, maintaining a healthy diet and then there were things like inversion therapy.

But one natural hair growth remedy that seemed to be quite popular was using onion juice. For someone who has tried everything from apple cider vinegar to seaweed on her face, I was still surprised about the onion juice. But after going through a hoard of articles and a bunch of Youtube videos that promoted this to be the holy grail of hair growth remedies, I knew I just had to try it. Well, I did try it and I’m here to tell you what exactly happened.

Like I already said, the internet speaks very highly of this magic remedy. But what exactly do onions do for our hair? Stop breakage or promote the growth of new hair? Well, here are the advantages of onions for hair as claimed by those who have tried it out:

  • The high sulphur content in onions is said to nourish your scalp and stimulate hair growth.
  • The anti-bacterial properties of the onions will prevent infection and dandruff.
  • The antioxidants in the onions will delay greying of hair.
  • This natural remedy for hair growth is said to stimulate the scalp and improve hair follicle health.

My experience with this DIY hair remedy!

So after reading about the raving reviews online, I decided to try it out over the weekend. There are several ways of using onion juice on your hair topically but I only tried one method. Here was my experience:

  • Onion juice+coconut oil: One of the most popular methods of using onion juice on hair is to mix it with coconut oil and apply it to your scalp. I grated onions, squeezed the juice out and mixed it with an equal amount of coconut oil.

My experience: Even though I knew onions wouldn’t exactly smell like a spa hair potion, I was still repulsed by the pungent smell once it got on my scalp. The more I massaged into my scalp, the more intense the smell got. My husband decided to stay in the living room until I had washed it out. I left it on for 30 minutes and washed my hair. I could smell the onion in my hair when I was washing it off and even my extremely fragrant conditioner couldn’t mask the pungent smell.

Results: The smell was not as intense once my hair dried out but it was still there. My hair was definitely softer and my scalp felt much cleaner too. I wasn’t expecting for new baby hair to pop up with my first use, but my hair did look a bit thicker.

My experience after two months

I religiously used this remedy once a week for two months. You’d think that I’d have gotten used to the smell after using it so many times. But with each time, the smell became even more unbearable. But on the brighter side, I did notice my hair looking thicker and much more healthy at the end of two months. 

Will I continue?

Do I want luscious hair with a hairline that doesn’t match my husband’s? Definitely! But do I want it at the cost of smelling like rotten onions? I don’t think so. The problem is that I could smell it in my hair even after washing it off and layering my hair with serums. If you are not the one to be bothered by the smell, you should definitely give it a try. If that’s a big price to pay for you, I suggest you stick with me while I search for a better homemade hair remedy.
