I have so many clothes, momma!

Congratulations, new parents! The most beautiful and crazy days of your life begin now. As overwhelming as it can be, nothing compares to the joy of being a new parent. One thing parents love about this new life is shopping for baby clothes. There is just something about the tiny outfits that has us brimming with happiness. But before you start buying clothes for your newborn baby, there are a few things you need to know. This article will not only help you buy the right clothes for your baby but will also stop you from splurging on unnecessary things.

To make shopping even easier for you, Hopscotch has created a special catalogue for newborn baby shopping. But first, it’s important to learn about the basics of purchasing clothes for a newborn baby.

Comfort over fashion

Comfort comes first!

A major mistake most parents make when shopping for newborn clothes is that they instantly go for cute baby clothes. But trust us when we say that simple clothes are probably the best way to go with babies. New-borns have extremely sensitive skin that reacts easily. We suggest going for airy soft clothes in cotton and organic materials. Babies spend all their time lying on the back, so we suggest avoiding clothes with detailing (buttons, embellishments) on the back.

Convenience is important

Less is more!

It is important to note that you will be changing your baby’s clothes a few times throughout the day. Hence, it is important to go for clothes that are easy to wear and remove. We suggest loading up on onesies and singlets with wide head openings. You might also want to go for colours that don’t fade too easily as you will be washing the clothes quite often.

Shopping by season

Shop by the season!

While this might seem like a no-brainer, very few of us actually pay much attention to this important rule. If your baby is born in summer, a woollen baby sweater is probably not the best thing to buy. If you think the sweater will fit your baby when winter arrives, you need a lesson on how fast babies grow. Only purchase clothes that are suitable for the next three months after the baby’s birth.

Only buy what you need

Cute booties!

It is quite easy to go overboard when you are purchasing clothes for newborn babies, the temptation to buy all the cute things trumps our need to save up. In such instances, usually, parents end up buying some unnecessary things and waste their money. For instance, shoes are completely useless and impractical for babies as they barely fit their feet and usually irritate them. Instead, opt for baby booties to keep your baby’s feet warm when you are outside.

Essential clothes for a newborn baby!

A baby’s wardrobe should contain:

  • 4-5 onesies/bodysuits- They are easy to wear and are absolutely fuss-free. We suggest going for ones with wide neck and leg holes to ensure you don’t pull or tug too much while dressing the baby.
  • 4-5 vest and pant set- You can easily find matching baby sets online that are perfect for when you are taking your tiny one outside and need something a little more fancier than a onesie.
  • 2 Cardigans/sweaters- Unlike adults, babies are very susceptible to the slightest change in the weather. Keep a few soft cardigans or sweaters in handy for when the temperature drops.
  • 3-5 booties- Like we already mentioned, your baby definitely does not need shoes. Crochet booties more than serve the purpose when you want to keep their feet warm.
  • 2 crochet hats- While a slight breeze might feel pleasant to you, it can make your baby uncomfortable. Protect your precious baby’s head with soft hats when you venture out.

We know that it can be overwhelming being a new parent. But if we can give you any advice, it is to treasure the little moments and not doubt yourself. Do you have any advice for the other new parents out there? Let us know in the comments below!
