8 smart tips that will help organise your kid’s closet!

My kids’ closet always looks like someone raided it.  It should come as no surprise since an organized closet is the last thing on any child’s mind. So it is up to us parents to bring in some discipline in their life. Over the last few months, I’ve been using a new system to arrange the closet and I’m glad to say it has worked out very well for both the kids and me. While I don’t walk into a messy room anymore, they have a well-arranged closet where everything is within their reach. Here is how to organise your kid’s closet quickly.

Start from scratch

The first step is to empty out the closet completely. While it might seem unnecessary, it really helps you analyze the closet space and sort out items easily. I usually go over the shelves and drawers with a wet cleaning cloth and place some wardrobe freshener sachets inside. A clean, fresh, and empty closet provides you with the perfect base.

Categorize

The next step is to sort from the pile of clothes and exclude the ones your kid might not wear anymore. You can either give these away or recycle them. Divide the rest of the clothes into different categories. I prefer splitting them into separate groups of kids t-shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, etc. The other popular ways to categorize are by colour, season, and frequency of use. Opt for what you think will work best for your child.

Multiple-purpose closet tools

Closet space was my biggest challenge since my boys share a single closet. Getting all the clothes to fit into the hanger space in the closet was a real struggle until I came across multi-purpose hangers. These hangers not only save a lot of closet space but they are also very easy to use for your little ones.

Storage bins for convenience

For clothing items that cannot be hung, storage bins work best They are easy to use, sturdy, and fit in any closet. They are perfect for storing T-shirts, socks, shorts, and pyjamas. We suggest getting a few of these in bright colours to make the closet look more attractive. They can also be lined up against the wall if there is no space in the closet.

Toy with it

While many believe toys aren’t exactly a part of closet organization, I beg to differ. Children need a place to store their toys and the corner of the room isn’t that place. Instead of shoving the toys under the bed, we suggest that you get a toy organizer for your child where they can keep all their playthings. They do not take up much space in the room and keep the toys safe.

Expand the closet

There are ways to expand the storage capacity of a closet without adding a new shelf or rebuilding it. I have installed a few hooks on the inside of the closet door where my kids can hang their bags, hats, and accessories. You can use hooks, hanging closet organizers, racks, and jewellery organizers on the inside of the closet doors to expand the storage capacity.

Laundry bag

While this might seem insignificant, it actually can help immensely in keeping your kid’s closet clean. A laundry hamper will ensure that there are no dirty clothes lying around the room or stuffed in some corner of the closet.

Let your kids help

This tip has really helped me make sure that the closets stay organized for a long time. When my kids were helping me organize their closet, they realized all the hard work that went into it and have put in the effort to be tidier ever since. With the extra help, you can organise your kids closet quite quickly. Also, you can make it a pretty fun chore with music and the promise of delicious snacks later.
