When I got hitched last year, I thought this is it for the all the romance that comes with courting someone. So, when a year later he proposed we do something for our first Valentine’s day as a married couple, I was excited beyond normal reason!

As non-materialistic people, we thought of taking a trip to Srinagar – one of the most enchanting, romantic places you could visit with your better half. The decision was not easy – in fact, it was two weeks’ worth of research that finally convinced me that it was the breathtaking Dal Lake that I wanted to spend the day at.

What this research also yielded was some of the most stunning locations in India that you could take a short trip to, for a budget-friendly romantic getaway!

So, I present a list of the 6 best places to visit on Valentine’s day that you don’t want to miss out on.

Dhankar Lake, Spiti Valley

When the celestial beauty of the snow-clad mountain peaks cuffs the enchanting charm of the glacial lake, and you sit underneath the azure sky and amidst the captivating mountains, it’s difficult to not feel all mushy and gooey. This lake in Spiti Valley is where you want to be this Valentine’s day, to experience the romance ushered in by the towering peaks, low-flying clouds and the snow!

When I was in a girls’ boarding school in Nainital, the enthralling beauty of the divine Naini Lake always made me deeply philosophical. When you take that boat ride on Naini Lake, with a backdrop of the calming mountains witnessing your togetherness, your love is sure to blossom in many amazing ways.

Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

The greenery in this unconventional romantic destination took us by surprise when we took a trip there last year. You are bound to surrender yourself to a hundred different shades of green here. This place oozes romance and is definitely one of my personal favourites!

Havelock Islands, Andaman

Andaman Island is home to many different kinds of alluring beaches, and while the azure waters along with the revitalising greenery are sure to take your breath away, don’t miss out on gazing longingly at the tepid beaches. Destress at this gorgeous location with your beloved this Valentine’s day and refill on all the lost energy. If you’re lucky, you might even get to converse with an elephant or two during your stay.

Pelling, Sikkim

A quaint town nestling in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim, Pelling offered a refreshing outlook on life through its completely grounded residents who were thoroughly hospitable and so kind, I felt like I was in a movie! The multi-coloured valleys of Pelling are transcending and serve as a sure-shot reminder of the beautiful romance that you share with your better half! A must-visit.

Mawsynram, Meghalaya

Located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, you would want to blink less when at Mawsynram, to not let even a moment slip through! The place is an embodiment of romance and the light drizzle just adds to the exoticness that the place offers. Taking a stroll through the dimly-lit mountainous roads after sunset brought back thousands of memories for me and the husband, and we felt completely rejuvenated.

These are some of my favourite places to visit on Valentine’s day! I’m sure you’d love them too.
