The magic of bedtime stories!

‘Cinderella’ and ‘Goldilocks & the Three Bears’ make for amazing bedtime stories, we all know it. Though these fairytale stories are fun, they are just entertainment. But the purpose of bed-time stories doesn’t just have to be preparing your children for sleep. They can be used as a tool to teach your kids morals and values through interesting children’s stories. Here are 3 bed time stories for kids that teach values of hard work, determination, and a positive mindset!

There is no success without struggle!

You can’t fly without a bit of struggle!

Once a man was passing through a forest when he notices a butterfly’s cocoon on a tree branch. He decided to sit down and watch the butterfly’s transformation. He watched the butterfly for hours as it tried to force itself out of a small hole. After a few hours, the butterfly suddenly stopped moving as it got stuck.

The man felt bad for the butterfly and decided to help it out. He took a knife and cut the cocoon carefully so as not to hurt the butterfly. Though the butterfly emerged, it looked weak. Its body looked swollen and its wings shrivelled.

He sat there waiting for the butterfly to grow wings and start flying. No matter what the butterfly did, the wings wouldn’t grow and he was stuck there unable to fly with his swollen body and weak wings.

The man was confused because he thought he was helping the butterfly by getting rid of its struggles but what he didn’t know was that his very action made the butterfly weak and disabled. The butterfly needed to struggle through the cocoon because that was the only way the fluid from its body would reach its wings which would help it fly. Since its struggle was cut short, the butterfly could never fully develop and gain strength and now had to lead its life crawling around.

Moral: You have to endure struggles to succeed.

Never give up!

Self-doubt is the biggest obstacle!

A tourist was walking through an elephant camp when she spotted gigantic elephants nearby. Wanting to catch a glimpse of them from up close, she moved towards the elephants. As she got closer, she noticed that the only thing restraining the elephants were tiny pieces of rope tied to their legs. She was surprised by how such mammoth beings were being restrained by small pieces of rope.

Noticing a trainer nearby, she went and asked him why the elephants didn’t escape when they could easily break away from the rope. The trainer said, “When the elephants were young, they were restrained using the same rope. Since they were much smaller then, they couldn’t escape. As they grew up, they continued to believe that the rope was much stronger than them. That’s why even now they do not try to break free.”

The tourist was amazed. The elephants could break away from the rope anytime and escape. But just because they believed they couldn’t, they stayed as captives.

Moral of the story: Always believe in your capabilities and be determined to fight anything life throws at you.

Thomas Edison and the assistant!

Learn from your mistakes!

This story is about one of the greatest inventors ever. Before he invented the light bulb, Thomas Edison had his share of struggles. One of his biggest struggles was finding a filament for the light bulb. He tried thousands of different materials in search of a filament. His assistant got frustrated when none of them worked. “We have failed.”, he lamented “We have worked so hard and we have learnt nothing.”

Edison laughed and replied, “How can you say we haven’t learned anything? We now know that there are two thousand materials that we cannot use to make a lightbulb.”  Soon after, he invented the light bulb.

Moral of the story: Having the right mindset can help you achieve success. With the right mindset, every failure becomes a stepping stone for success instead of a deterrent.

  1. Good Morning Hopscotch!

I love these stories! As a teacher, I am looking for more ways to teach kids morals and humanity. Are there any stories with characters from various cultural backgrounds? I work in a city of diverse traditions and beliefs and desperately need stories that reflect all of my students. Looking forward to sharing in my classroom.

    Sincerely,
    Ms. D
